Lowry Field

This neighborhood stands on the former site of Lowry Air Force Base, a training facility active during World War II and the Cold War. From 1955 to 1958, it also served as the initial home of the U.S. Air Force Academy before its relocation to Colorado Springs. After the base closed in 1994, it was transformed into one of Denver’s most successful urban infill projects, becoming a vibrant mixed-use community.

The flag design honors this aviation legacy. The propeller icon symbolizes Lowry’s history as an Air Force training base, while the curved element reflects the distinctive architecture of Hangar 2, which remains a landmark today. The flag’s blue is officially recognized as U.S. Air Force Academy blue, further tying the design to the area’s military heritage. The neighborhood itself is named after 2nd Lt. Francis Lowry, a Colorado native and World War I aviator who was killed in action in 1918.
